Because your chimney is always exposed to the elements, it needs special care. Water is a chimneys worst enemy. Keep the water out, and it will last for many years. Even if you seldom use your fireplace, you should at least have the exterior inspected every few years, if not waterproofed.

Caps are not required, but are highly recommended. The main purpose is to keep water and animals out of the interior. Vacustack caps are used to prevent wind induced downdrafts. Chimney protectors are multi-flue chimney caps. Chase covers are used at the top of chimneys when a factory built/prefab fire place is installed.
